Bach Centre supports the campaign to save Britain’s bees


Nobody knows for sure why bees are dying, and it's likely that a number of factors are in play, not least a decline in food sources. But there is strong evidence to suggest that
neonicotinoid pesticides
are a major part of the problem. They have already been banned in many European countries.
Neonicotinoid pesticides work by upsetting the central nervous systems of insects. Bees coming into contact with them are less able to forage, fly, learn and communicate. Neonicotinoids were introduced precisely at the time that the decline in bee numbers started. The Bach Centre’s garden – which contains many remedy plants – has been left semi-wild and stocked with wildflowers so that it’s a good source of food for bees. But wildlife-friendly gardening by itself may not be enough to save the bees.

Dental plaque is believed to be a major etiologic factor in the development of dental caries, gingivitis and periodontitis. Large numbers and various types of bacteria exist in the oral cavity, therefore chemical removal of oral bacteria is useful to improve oral hygiene and gingival health. In this study, we examined the bactericidal effects of antiseptic mouth rinses against oral microorganisms. Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) has been reported to be successful in combating a variety of common infectious agents. We evaluated the bactericidal effects of GSE against oral microorganisms and compared their activities with LISTERINE, GUM, Isodine and HALIZON. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of these mouth rinses was determined for cultivated oral bacteria using two-fold dilutions. We also examined the bactericidal efficacy of these mouth rinses against oral bacteria in saliva. We found that these mouth rinses decreased the viable bacterial counts in saliva for 90 minutes, and the MIC ranged from 1/2 to 1/32,768. 

The results of this study suggest that GSE has bactericidal efficacy against both gram-negative and gram-positive oral pathogenic bacteria. Moreover, bactericidal effects against bacteria in saliva indicated that GSE is useful in the oral cavity as antiseptic mouth rinse.

Bach Flower Remedies: A Discovery that would Change the World

The Story:  THE FINDING OF THE FIRST THREE HERBAL REMEDIES

Although most of this discoveries up to that time had been made through scientific research, Edward Bach would trust to his intuition when science could give him no satisfactory answer to his problems, and he found that such inner knowledge always led him aright.

In the "new work" which he was so rapidly approaching, his intuition, his inspired genius alone was to guide him to truths undiscoverable through intellect and science. The year 1928 was a memorable one, for it was the birth of the new work.

Every moment he could spare from his practice and work in the laboratory he spent in searching for the plants and herbs with which he hoped to replace the seven bacterial nosodes.  He would return from a day in the country or by the sea, after a few hours at Kew or in the parks, with many specimens which he potentised and tested, comparing their results with those of the nosodes, but none of them fully satisfying him.

He pondered deeply upon the reason for this.  Being convinced that the true healing agents were to be found amongst the plants and trees of NATURE he sought for a greater understanding of disease itself, its cause and its effect upon the mind and body.

Bach had attended the dinner somewhat unwillingly and was not enjoying himself greatly. To pass the time he was idly watching the people around him when suddenly he realised that the whole of humanity consisted of a number of definite GROUP OF TYPES; that every individual in that large hall belonged to one or another of these GROUPS and he spent the rest of the evening watching all the people he could see; observing how they at their food, how they smiled and moved their hands and heads, the attitudes of their bodies, the expressions on their faces and, when he was close enough to hear, the tone of voice they used.

He found this a most engrossing occupation, and by the time the diner was over he had worked out a number of GROUPS and was busy in his mind comparing these with his seven bacterial groups [nosodes]. It would be a continuation upon a gigantic scale of the work already done on the nosodes, and he wondered how this extended GROUP-THEORY would apply to disease and its cure--whether the diseases from which these groups suffered would also bear a resemblance to each other. Then came the inspiration that the individuals of each GROUP would not suffer from the same kinds of diseases, but that ll those in any one GROUP would react in the same or nearly the same manner to any type of illness.

He could not wait for the end of the evenings entertainment, but left as soon as he could to think out these new idea.  However, it was not until he had left London in 1930, and was able to give his full attention to the study, that he worked them out in detail.

Every patient who came to him from then onwards was closely observed; every characteristic, every mood, every reaction to disease, each mannerism and little habit was noted and, as far as he was able with the remedies he already had, he prescribed for them on these indications.

The results were so encouraging that he was satisfied his intuition had again led him into the right path.  It was the principle of Hahnemann amplified, and it more nearly approached his own ideals of healing than had any method he had practised so far.

One day late in September of that same year he had a sudden urge to go to Wales and, obeying the impulse, he was rewarded by finding two beautiful plants--the pale mauve Impatiens, and the golden flowered Mimulus--growing in great profusion near a mountain stream.

He brought these back to London and prepared them in the same way has he had done the oral vaccines.  When he came to use them, prescribing them according to the personality of the patient, they had, to this great joy, immediate and remarkable results.

One more plant he found and potentised that year--the wild Clematis, and these three remedies formed the first of the thirty-eight herbs he was to find and use in the new system of herbal medicine he discovered.

With these few remedies he began treating his patients according to their TYPE alone, and an account of them, together with one or two others he had found and used with good results, was published in The Homeopathic World of February 1930, entitled "Some New Remedies and their Uses."

So convinced was Edward Bach that he would now be able to replace the bacterial nosodes by the pure and simple herbs of the field that he decided, towards the end of 1929, to give up all other methods of treatment and use these three remedies, the Mimulus, Impatiens and wild Clematis, alone, whilst seeking others to add to their number.

He knew he was on the verge of discovering an entirely new system of medicine, although as yet he had no real conception as to the exact form this new method would take. So great was the urge to begin the search that he could not rest, nor continue with the work on the nosodes that he and his medical friends had been working to complete.

All he had done so far, he considered, was but a step towards this new healing, and he was impatient to begin seriously upon the fresh theories. At last he told his friends that he was about to give up his work in London and devote himself to the task of finding WORLD-TYPES and searching for the further remedies which would health these TYPES and, by doing so, heal all the diseases from which they might suffer.

This took his friends by surprise, they had always looked upon him as a leader of scientific research, a genius who had made and would make, further discoveries in that branch of medicine. They were well content with the oral vaccines; nothing so far had been discovered to compare with them, and they could not follow him in his new ideas which they felt were ideals with but little practical use.

They did their best to dissuade him from going and leaving his work as it were unfinished, but nothing could shake his determination or weaken his conviction that he was on the threshold of far greater discoveries. Edward Bach's decision to give up all his previous work and begin again was not a light one to make.  His Harley Street practice was bringing him an income of over $5,000 UK a year; the work of preparing vaccines to send to medical men all over the world was in itself a full-time occupation; and, in addition to this, he was looked upon as an outstanding genius in his own line, with an even bigger future ahead of him.

But none of this did he consider or regret for one moment.

All that concerned him was the certainty which became stronger as the days passed that his work lay in another direction and that he would find what he sought amongst the trees and plants remedies which were already prepared for many by NATURE Herself, and were only waiting to be discovered...

...Thus, in the spring of 1930, Edward Bach, then forty-three years old, was preparing to begin his work all over again, and on entirely different lines.

His great intellectual powers had led him to make many scientific discoveries, the use of the which brought and is still bringing, through orthodox medicine and homeopathy, relief and healing to many sufferers; but now he felt awakening within him that divine inspiration which is intuition, the true wisdom.

Guided by this, he was ready to forsake all scientific and artificial methods of healing and to return to the simple ways of NATURE.

Bisphenol A Tied to Health Problems 

Study Shows Plastic Chemical Linked to Heart Disease, Diabetes; Industry Says No Proof Bisphenol A is to Blame

For the first time, the controversial plastic chemical bisphenol A has been linked to serious health problems -- heart disease and diabetes -- in people.

Bisphenol A, also called BPA, is used in polycarbonate plastic -- hard plastic used in products including some baby bottles and refillable water bottles -- and in epoxy resins, which line some canned goods and are also in dental composites and sealants. Bisphenol A isn't found in softer plastics, such as single-serving water bottles.

A new study links high urinary levels of bisphenol A to a history of heart disease or diabetes, and to abnormally high concentrations of liver enzymes.

The study doesn't prove that bisphenol A caused those problems. But the findings are "disturbing," says David Schardt, MS, senior nutritionist of the Center for Science in the Public Interest. The plastics industry, on the other hand, stands by bisphenol A's safety.

The findings, published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, will be presented today at an FDA public hearing on bisphenol A. WebMD will be covering that meeting; look for a report later. Meanwhile, here's what you need to know about the new bisphenol A study.

Bisphenol A Study Findings

Most bisphenol A studies have been done in lab tests on rodents. The new study is all about humans.
The researchers checked government data on heart disease, diabetes, and bisphenol A in 1,455 U.S. adults age 18-74.
As part of a national health study done in 203-2004, participants provided urine samples and were asked if they had ever been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease -- heart attack, coronary heart disease, or chest pain (angina) -- or diabetes.
People with the highest urinary levels of bisphenol A were more than twice as likely to report ever being diagnosed with cardiovascular disease or diabetes, compared to people with the lowest urinary levels of bisphenol A. High urinary levels of bisphenol A were also linked to abnormal concentrations of liver enzymes.
To put the heart disease and diabetes findings in perspective, those conditions were relatively rare: 79 people reported a history of heart disease and 136 reported a history of diabetes.
The study didn't directly test bisphenol A to see if caused health problems, so it doesn't prove that bisphenol A was to blame.
Still, the results held regardless of factors including age, sex, race, smoking, and BMI (body mass index). But the researchers didn't adjust for all possible influences, including family history of heart disease or diabetes.

Researcher's Comments

David Melzer, MB, PHD, worked on the new bisphenol A study. He's a professor of epidemiology and public health at Peninsula Medical School at England's University of Exeter.
People with high urinary levels of bisphenol A probably weren't exposed to extreme levels of bisphenol A, according to Melzer.

"It looks as if what people were exposed to was way lower than what is considered the safe level at the moment," Melzer tells WebMD. But he adds that it's not clear where their bisphenol A came from.
Melzer's team isn't calling for a ban on bisphenol A, and they're not telling people to ditch their canned goods or polycarbonate plastic products. But they do want to see more research done.

Melzer says future research should check the study's findings in other groups of people, track healthy people to see if those with high levels of bisphenol A develop health problems later on, and identify the leading sources of bisphenol A exposure.

"Which are the main products, which types of food, what particular packaging is actually delivering these levels into people?" asks Melzer. "It would be much easier to understand what to do if we knew where it was coming from, especially in those people who seem to have marginally higher levels."For now, Melzer warns against jumping to conclusions. "Please don't read too much into this first study; it's limited in various ways," he says.

Melzer also notes that a healthy lifestyle -- regardless of bisphenol A --is still a crucial part of preventing heart disease and diabetes. "Healthy eating and exercise and so on are still very important," says Melzer.


Bisphenol A Critic's View

Fred vom Saal, PhD, is a bisphenol A researcher who co-wrote an editorial published with the study.
"It is important to point out that it is a snapshot study -- one measurement of bisphenol A and in relation to health status," vom Saal tells WebMD. But he says the results show "such a strong relationship" between high urinary bisphenol A levels and health effects.

He explains that bisphenol A acts like estrogen, pushing up insulin levels, which may lead to insulin resistance and diabetes. "That's exactly what it does in animals," says vom Saal, who will also testify at today's FDA meeting.
Asked what he'll tell the FDA, vom Saal answers, "Nothing that they want to hear." He's critical of the FDA's stance that bisphenol A is safe at typical exposure levels from food and drink.

"The FDA says there has to be a reasonable certainty of safety in order to use these products. I look at the entire literature and I say there is a very reasonable certainty of harm," says vom Saal.

An FDA spokesperson wasn't immediately available to comment on that. The FDA recently issued a draft report on the safety of bisphenol A in food contact items (food and drink packaging). That draft report deemed bisphenol A food and drink containers safe for typical use. European regulators recently took a similar stance.

But another government agency, the National Toxicology Program, doesn't rule out all risk from bisphenol A. In a separate report the NTP notes "some concern" for effects on the brain, prostate gland, and on behavior in fetuses, infants, and children.

All of that controversy will be front and center at today's FDA meeting.


Industry Responds

WebMD contacted the American Chemistry Council (a trade group for the plastics industry) and the North American Metal Packaging Alliance (a trade group for the canned goods industry) for their comments on the study.
The American Chemistry Council replied by email with a statement underscoring the limitations mentioned in the study. Because of those limitations, "this new study cannot support a conclusion that bisphenol A causes any disease,"Steven G. Hentges, PhD, of the American Chemistry Council's Polycarbonate/BPA Global Group, states in a news release. "The weight of scientific evidence continues to support the conclusion of governments worldwide that bisphenol Ais not a significant health concern at the trace levels present in some consumer products," Hentges states.

The council doesn't totally dismiss the study, but it sees the study as being "primarily useful for generating hypotheses that can be tested with more appropriate experiments or analyses," states the council's news release.
The North American Metal Packaging Alliance (NAMPA) also emailed a statement, which points out that study participants only provided one urine sample, and that the body "quickly and efficiently" eliminates bisphenol A through urine. "To suggest that BPA concentrations measured at a single point in time during the process of elimination from the body correlate in any way directly with serious chronic disorders is entirely unsupported and an unsubstantiated scientific leap," states NAMPA, adding that "while the study raises interesting questions, it provides no scientifically defensible answers" and requires further research.


Nutritionist's View

The CSPI's Schardt notes that in lab tests on animals, the biggest risks appeared to be to young animals, but Melzer's team found risks in adults, including people too old to have been exposed to bisphenol A as kids.
"So that's a mystery: If they were being harmed by BPA, when did this happen?" asks Schardt. Like Melzer, Schardt calls for more research.

"One can't expect the government to make a 180-degree turn based on one study like this," says Schardt. "It underscores the need for more research on BPA. We need to get to the bottom of this, we need to find out what, if anything, BPA is doing to us."

Schardt says there's not enough evidence yet to call for a ban on bisphenol A, but he suggests that parents may want to consider using bisphenol A-free containers for babies and kids. As for adults, "you don't really want to make drastic changes in your lifestyle based on one study," says Schardt. 
"Of course, people are free to try to avoid BPA but again, they're not going to avoid it entirely because it's just everywhere."

Systemic Oral Enzyme Offer Real Hope for MS Patients

Over 20 years ago, Dr. Max Wolf reported of his frequent success in achieving remissions in intermittent MS by administering Wobenzyme N, a patented, medically validated systemic oral enzyme preparation available over-the-counter in the United States.

These initial results were confirmed by Dr. Christina Neuhofer who repeatedly published her own extensive therapeutic experiences using Wobenzym N.  In an early report of results among 150 of her patients, chronic MS was evident in 107 and intermittent in progression in 43.

Technology Development

Enzymes contained in Wobenzym are proteins, and proteolytic enzymes do break themselves down (auto-proteolysis) -- quite like the snake that cannibalizes itself by chewing on its own tail.
That was the challenge that faced Dr. Ransberger in the early 1960s: Namely, how to stabilize the enzymes while purifying them in large quantities with the highest potency. How Enzymes Protect the Myelin Sheath
A healthy nerve cell with endings (axons). The coating of the nerve filaments contains periodic constrictions known as the node's of Ranvier which enable a more rapid conduction of the nerve impulse. The enlargements reveals a cross section of the nerve fiber and this coating. 

Immune complexes and autoantibodies are bonded to the myelin sheath of the nerve fibers. Complement proteins accumulate (to form complexes) and subsequently activate the complement cascade. With the aid of adhesion molecules, a special, sensitized, cytoclastic T lymphocyte attempts to dock onto the myelin sheath. This myelin sheath in inflamed and larger segments have already been destroyed.

Enzymes break down the immune complexes and autoantibodies. They thereby reduce the complement reaction and prevent consequent destruction of the myelin sheath.  The adhesion molecules of the cytoclastic lymphoycytes are altered to such an extent that the accumulation of these cells within the myelin sheath does not take place. Enzymes are unable to repair the damage which has already occurred, but the extent of the inflammation can be reduced.
