Studies Report More Harmful Effects of BPA


(HealthDay News) -- More potentially harmful health effects have been discovered for the chemical bisphenol A, found in clear plastic bottles and other everyday items, according to several new animal studies.

Not only are humans probably being exposed to generally unsafe levels of BPA, as the chemical is commonly called, but it could be causing arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats, research shows. That could be especially problematic for women, who may be at higher risk for this type of cardiac threat.

In addition, other researchers say that they have found the mechanism by which BPA, a synthetic hormone with estrogen-like properties, might affect later fertility of babies whose mothers were exposed to the chemical.
These findings are being reported this week at the Endocrine Society's annual meeting, in Washington, D.C.
BPA, a chemical used to harden plastics, is in myriad items, including CDs, sunglasses and dental sealants. It is also in the lining of metal cans and bottle tops. Some studies have linked it to cancer, diabetes, heart disease and developmental problems in children. Health advocates say exposure to the chemical could present a particular problem to developing fetuses.

...Researchers for one of the studies to be presented this week concluded that estrogen and BPA cause heartbeat irregularities in heart cells isolated from rats and mice.

"Basically, it's very clear that BPA is acting like estrogen," said study co-author Scott Belcher, an associate professor of pharmacology at the University of Cincinnati. "If we give estrogen at physiological concentrations, then add BPA, it's actually a synergistic effect. It's not like adding the two together. It's worse."
Women are more likely to die after a heart attack than men, and Belcher suspects an increased rate of arrhythmia might bear some of the responsibility for that trend.

His team is currently collecting human heart cells from transplant patients to try to replicate the findings.
In another study, researchers report on the mechanism by which BPA affects fertility in the offspring of rodents.
"The genes that are necessary for normal pregnancy are altered," explained study author Dr. Hugh Taylor, director of the division of reproductive endocrinology at Yale University School of Medicine. "It changes the DNA code and the ability of DNA to express these genes."

"A little transient exposure during a brief time period in pregnancy could permanently alter the DNA of the uterus," Taylor added.

In a third study, researchers warned that people may be getting higher-than-recommended exposure to BPA from both known and unknown sources, a conclusion they drew from research involving monkeys. The researchers, from the University of Missouri, had compared the blood level of BPA in monkeys given high doses of the chemical with average levels found in people in the United States and other developed countries.
More than 8 billion pounds of BPA are used in the manufacturing of products each year, they said.

Chemical industry representatives, however, disagree that the findings represent any real threat to human health.
"It is disappointing to see that researchers continue to inject animals with bisphenol A since studies of this type have recently been acknowledged by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to have limited impact on our ability to assess human health effects," said Steve Hentges, executive director of the Polycarbonate/BPA Global Group at the American Chemistry Council.

The gonadal steroid hormone, estrogen, can diminish the degree of striatal dopamine depletion resulting from methamphetamine. In this article, we describe the conditions of this estrogen neuroprotection as well as the potential for estrogen and testosterone to enhance methamphetamine-induced neurodegeneration of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system. When administered prior to a neurotoxic regimen of methamphetamine, estrogen significantly decreases the amount of striatal dopamine depletion in intact or gonadectomized female, but not male, mice. This capacity for estrogen to function as a neuroprotectant can occur quite rapidly, at 30 min prior to methamphetamine administration, and with relatively low doses of estrogen (1 microg estradiol benzoate). Estrogen remains an effective neuroprotectant in neonatally  female mice treated with testosterone, but not in female mice that were gonadectomized prior to puberty. Nor does estrogen demonstrate any beneficial effects when administered after methamphetamine. Recent data have indicated some conditions where gonadal steroids can increase the extent of striatal neurodegeneration in response to methamphetamine. Specifically, when some existing perturbation is present in the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system, treatment with estrogen enhances the extent of striatal dopamine depletion to methamphetamine. In recent years PARABENS have become a very hot topic. Many of you may be wondering what parabens are, where you find them and why they should be avoided. What are parabens? First, lets begin with the what: Parabens are a group of chemicals widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Parabens are effective preservatives in many types of formulas. These compounds, and their salts, are used primarily for their bacteriocidal and fungicidal properties. ... [parabens can be found] in almost every cosmetic product. They can be found in shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, personal lubricants, topical/parenteral pharmaceuticals, spray tanning solution and toothpaste. They are also used as food additives. Common parabens include: methylparaben (E218) ethylparaben (E214) propylparaben (E216) butylparaben  Less common parabens include isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben,benzylparaben and their sodium salts. Why should we care about parabens?  Parabens are considered to be safe because of their low toxicity profile and their long history of safe use; however, a few recent studies have begun to challenge this view. It seems as if parabens act as endocrine disruptors (they disrupt our hormone system), man or woman, estrogen or testosterone. What is an endocrine disruptor? Endocrine disruptors are chemical substances, primarily man-made synthetics, that interfere with the function of the endocrine/hormone system. These chemicals mimic, block or disrupt the actions of human (and animal) hormones and, unexpectedly, do more damage at low levels of exposure than at high levels. These chemicals can also work in sinister yet subtle ways by disrupting the body's ability to produce adequate quantities of hormones or by interfering with the body's hormonal pathways. One single chemical can affect many parts of the endocrine system. Often minute amounts of several of these environmental hormone chemicals can combine to create effects thousands of times more potent than a single chemical. The endocrine system regulates every function of the body. It consists of the thyroid, pituitary, and adrenal glands, the pancreas, the ovaries and the testes, all linked to the hypothalamus in the brain. The hypothalamus is like the mainframe computer of the body, sending signals to the glands that provide the instructions for creating hormones. When you rub body care products on your body or hair dye on your scalp you can absorb or inhale synthetic chemicals that contain endocrine disruptors which may send false signals to your body's endocrine glands. When your glands are confused they cannot function normally and serious health problems result. In addition, when you bathe, whatever chemicals aren't absorbed by your body are washed down the drain into the drinking water supply, where they can cause a cascade of negative environmental problems. These endocrine disruptors are affecting algae and other microscopic life, fish, whales and birds. Humans are exposed when they drink the water and eat the fish contaminated by personal care product chemicals. The government has found sunscreen chemicals in fish and human breast milk. Endocrine disruptors are stored in the body's fatty tissues and do not get flushed out with water, thus they accumulate over the years. It is now recognized that the dramatic increases of breast cancer, non- Hodgkins lymphoma and thyroid cancer have been linked to exposure to environmental estrogens. In particular, parabens mimic estrogen, a hormone necessary for a healthy menstruation, reproductive system and fat cell activity. A Scottish study found parabens in human breast tumors. In the past twenty-five years in the US, alone, thyroid cancer has increased more than 45%, with more women being affected than men, and has become the number one cancer in children under age twenty, many of whom suffered from fetal endocrine disruption. How can you protect yourself? Read every ingredient on every personal care product label and be suspicious of every chemical ingredient. NON-Drug Psych Treatment for Hearing Voices: rTMS

Patients suffering from depression, schizophrenia, manic/depression,may find relief from treatments using electromagnetic stimulation, offering a possible alternative to mood-altering medications, a new study found.

The treatment, known as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) offers future hope of a non-drug treatment for depression sufferers, although researchers said additional studies are needed.

“This study should help settle the debate about whether rTMS works for depression,” said Mark George of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, who led the research team.

Bach Centre supports the campaign to save Britain’s bees

Nobody knows for sure why bees are dying, and it's likely that a number of factors are in play, not least a decline in food sources. But there is strong evidence to suggest that

neonicotinoid pesticides

are a major part of the problem. They have already been banned in many European countries.

Neonicotinoid pesticides work by upsetting the central nervous systems of insects. Bees coming into contact with them are less able to forage, fly, learn and communicate. Neonicotinoids were introduced precisely at the time that the decline in bee numbers started. The Bach Centre’s garden – which contains many remedy plants – has been left semi-wild and stocked with wildflowers so that it’s a good source of food for bees.
